**Trump Announces Arrest of Key Suspect in 2021 Abbey Gate Bombing, Credits Pakistan for Assistance**
In his first address to Congress since beginning his second term, US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the individual responsible for the deaths of 13 US service members during the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan has been arrested and is en route to the United States to face justice. The arrest was made possible with the assistance of Pakistan.
The 2021 Abbey Gate bombing, which occurred during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan, claimed the lives of 13 American troops and approximately 170 Afghan civilians. The attack was claimed by the militant Islamic State (IS) group.
While Trump did not provide specific details about the suspect, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif identified the individual in a post on X as Sharifullah, described as a "top-tier operational commander" of the Islamic State's Khorasan Province (IS-KP) chapter.
"Tonight, I am pleased to announce that we have apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that horrific attack, and he is on his way here to face the swift sword of American justice," Trump told Congress.
In a rare public acknowledgment, Trump expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its role in the arrest, stating, "I want to especially thank the government of Pakistan for helping capture this monster."
Trump also highlighted his personal connection with the families of the US victims, sharing, "I spoke to many of the parents and loved ones, and they are all in our hearts tonight. I just spoke to them on the phone. We had a big call. Everyone was on the line, and they could do nothing but cry with happiness."
The announcement marks a significant development in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the Abbey Gate bombing, underscoring the collaborative efforts between the US and Pakistan in combating terrorism.
